Mentor Position Descriptions


In general, the Terp Young Scholars - In-Person Program Mentor chaperones students, plans and implements activities, and provides a welcoming, enthusiastic presence. The Program Mentor must be available at all scheduled times the program’s entirety. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Mandatory Training Sessions

Attend mandatory training sessions to review program procedures, expectations, and protocols.

General Requirements 

  • Follow the University of Maryland Code of Student Conduct.
  • Adhere to the Terp Young Scholars - In-Person training which outlines policies and procedures.
  • Positively represent EXST and UMD at all times.
  • Supervise students’ health, safety, and wellbeing by being present and available during the entirety of the program.
  • Ensure that students adhere to the Terp Young Scholars Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure that students adhere to University of Maryland rules and regulations.

Commuter Student Check-in Day 

  • Welcome students and assist with check-in.
  • Administrative duties as needed

First Three Days of Program 

  • Accompany commuter students to classes 
  • Collect students from classes and accompany to lunch, activities and events.

Mentoring

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students.
  • Work with students to assist with personal and academic issues.
  • Facilitate community building and foster relationships with students.
  • Facilitate group and individual meetings with students.
  • Mediate and report conflicts to EXST Pre-College staff.
  • Provide general support, leadership, and compassion for students.

Activities

  • Plan and supervise program activities and assist with program events.
  • Attend daily meetings to prepare for upcoming program activities and events.

Program Follow-up 

  • Participate in Mentor Focus Group.

In general, the Terp Young Scholars - Online Program Mentor facilitates a daily activity, leads daily check-ins with assigned students, participates in program meetings, and addresses student concerns. The Terp Young Scholars - Online Program Mentor must be available at all scheduled times to oversee these responsibilities for the program’s entirety. Duties and requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

Technology Requirements (Must have access to and use of the following):

  • Minimum 3G or 4G quality internet. 
  • Webcam (either built-in camera or webcam attachment). 
  • Microphone (either computer built-in microphone or attachment).
  • Zoom: Zoom is a web conferencing system that offers a variety of interactive features to help you collaborate and connect online. Zoom will be used by Terp Young Scholars to host staff meetings, student activities, and other community building meetings.

Training Sessions 

  • Attend mandatory online training sessions to review program procedures, expectations, and protocols.

  • Adhere to the Terp Young Scholars Training Manual which outlines policies and procedures.
  • Positively represent EXST and the University of Maryland at all times.
  • Have access to and consistently use a quiet, designated working space. 

Online Class Breakout Sessions

  • Participate and manage the Terp Young Scholars - Online Class Breakout Sessions.

Mentoring

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students.
  • Work with students to assist with personal and academic issues.
  • Facilitate community building and foster relationships with assigned students
  • Mediate and report conflicts to EXST Pre-College staff.
  • Facilitate Mentor Drop-in hours as a resource for assigned participants.
  • Send individual check-in messages through ELMS-Canvas to assigned students. 
  • Provide general support, leadership, and compassion for students.

Activities

  • Utilize Zoom to implement and manage program events and activities as assigned.
  • Attend all virtual staff meetings.

Duty and Supervision

  • Supervise student health, safety, and wellbeing by being present and available during the entirety of the program.
  • Ensure that students adhere to Terp Young Scholars - Online Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure that students adhere to University of Maryland rules and regulations.
  • Participate in assigned duty rotation schedule, which includes serving as primary responder to all students, policy violations and incidents.
  • Submit online incident reports for all concerns and policy violations.
  • Attend all staff meetings led by EXST Pre-College staff.
  • Provide students with updates and reminders on an as needed basis.
  • Follow the emergency protocol as outlined in the training manual and as presented during program training days.
  • Assist with first-day class (Zoom) and ELMS-Canvas access.

Program Final Day and Follow-up Tasks

  • Assist with general questions and events related to the program ending.
  • Participate in virtual Mentor Focus Group.

Other

  • Follow the emergency protocol as outlined in the Terp Young Scholars - Online Training Materials and as presented during program training days.
  • Provide students with updates and reminders on an as-needed basis.
