Graduate Certificate in Data Science

Digital data is being generated at such a rapid pace, resulting in ‘Big Data’ and requiring new techniques for processing and analysis. Whether it’s called big data analytics, predictive analytics, or advanced analytics, Data Science is a growing, evolving field—and nearly every industry is in need of professionals who have the skills required to guide decision-making processes. The Graduate Certificate of Professional Studies in Data Science (GC-Data Science) provides an advanced introduction to this field, while also providing a strong foundation to develop further expertise in the future. Get a degree that provides you with the skills required to compete in this exciting career.

GC-Data Science provides a broad introduction to the field—including how to extract and clean data, store and manage large volumes of data, and analyze such data and extract insights from it. The program involves interdisciplinary activities that create data-centered products, applications or programs that help to answer scientific, socio-political or business questions. It requires the ability to integrate data, operate on data at scale, and analyze data to make predictions, find patterns and form and test hypothesis. Practices from a variety of fields are incorporated, including in computer science disciplines such as Machine Learning, Statistics, Databases, and Visualization.

The GC-Data Science is a 12-credit graduate program designed to accommodate working professionals while minimally disrupting personal and professional life. The program may be completed through blended OR 100% online learning. In the blended learning option, students attend face to face classes that meet at the UMD College Park campus and/or participate remotely. In the 100% online learning option, lectures are accessed using video conferencing, video archived, and available for review anytime permitting asynchronous or synchronous participation.

The GC-Data Science uses the term academic calendar: in a 12-week term, students complete course work in 11 weeks; week 12 is reserved for finals. See Approved 12-Week Term Calendar for a specific academic year start and end dates. Courses are scheduled weekday evenings (e.g., 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm) to accommodate working professionals. Instruction is provided by College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences’ faculty. UMD’s online learning environment delivers online content through easy to use web-based technology that enables learning in an engaging, interactive environment.

The GC-Data Science is offered through the Science Academy, College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland. For additional information, visit:
