Plan of Study

GC-Multimedia Journalism is a 12-credit (four-course) program designed to be completed in nine to 18 months of study. Students may register for one or two courses (3 to 6 credits) in the fall semester and one or two courses (3 to 6 credits) in the spring. Students should visit Calendars & Deadlines to determine the semester schedule start and end dates as well as deadlines for cancellation or withdrawal. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required to maintain good academic progress for graduation. Students are responsible for keeping track of their progress and should review their academic record to ensure accuracy.

Instructors

Stokely Baksh is a multimedia journalist and graphic designer based in the Baltimore area. She has shot video for the Wall Street Journal and Baltimore Sun, and researched and reported for United Press International, the Center for Public Integrity, and the Investigative Reporting Workshop. She is the co-instructor for JOUR604.

Jennifer Rynda is a staff photographer for the Baltimore Sun Media Group. Become coming to Baltimore, Rynda worked for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y. She has won numerous awards for her work through contests sponsored by the MDDC Press Association, the New York State AP and the National Press Photographers Association. She is the co-instructor for JOUR604.

Mark W. Smith, mobile Web editor, The Washington Post; former senior manager, social media marketing, USA Today; former Web editor and technology columnist, Detroit Free Press, is the instructor for JOUR652.

Ron Yaros, Associate Professor, Merrill College, a former radio and TV reporter and anchor and former president of Yaros Communications, researches new structures for mobile and multimedia. He is the instructor for JOUR623.

Tom Davidson, who was senior director for PBS Digital; vice president for business and partner development at GrowthSpur; VP for content at Tribune Interactive; interactive general manager for the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale; and a reporter and editor at the Sun-Sentinel, is lead instructor for JOUR455.

Course Descriptions

JOUR455: Media Entrepreneurship. Principles and practices of entrepreneurship and business models for media. Students develop and pitch ideas for media businesses, perform skill-building exercises in business analysis, and digital media technologies, and study emerging media business models.

JOUR604: Introduction to Multimedia Skills for Graduate Certificate Programs.  Examine the basics of producing and editing digital photos, video and audio for news. Topics include framing, lighting and other aspects of composition; sequencing, using wide, medium and tight shots; and ethical considerations when collecting sound and visuals.

JOUR623: Mobile Journalism. Mobile consumers want news. This course goes beyond just text messaging with a review of several mobile applications and the "hands-on" skills needed to collect and share news in the field. First, students learn how to remotely post information to blogs and social networks. Students then learn and practice the latest location-based production techniques using web services on wireless laptops and mobile devices. Students use laptops (and their own "SmartPhone") to record, edit and upload audio and video. Basic computer skills are required.

JOUR652: Interactive Design and Development​. Editing and writing online, using basic Web-coding skills and tools to create news and feature packages for the Internet. New-media issues, including interactivity and individualization, are also to be discussed.
