During Summer Session, credit courses and non-credit workshops are open to current UMD students, students from other colleges and universities, graduates, professionals, and life-long learners. Students interested in credit who are not current UMD students must apply to Summer Session. For credit courses, credits and grade post to the UMD transcript. For non-credit workshops, neither credit nor grade is earned; workshop enrollment does not post to the UMD transcript. 

Courses and workshops meet in the Center Conference Room, The Phillips Collection, 1600 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC. For directions and parking, click here. The University reserves the right to cancel courses or workshops due to insufficient enrollment or for other reasons it deems necessary. Appropriate refunds will be made.

Enrollment Information

Courses and workshops offered at the University of Maryland Center for Art and Knowledge at The Phillips Collection during Summer Session have the following enrollment process. Students who enroll in UMD Summer Session courses and/or workshops are subject to the rules, policies and regulations found at the Summer Session Website.

Credit Courses: For Summer Session, students who enroll in a credit course offered at The Phillips Collection pay the off-site mandatory student services fee and do not have access to University facilities such as recreation. DC Consortium Students and Non-UMD students who apply and are admitted receive a University ID# which may be used to access any online element (course syllabi, etc.) which the course instructor may have planned. 

  • Current UMD Students: Register via Testudo
  • DC Consortium Students: Register via Consortium
  • Non-UMD Students Interested in Credit: Must apply to UMD for Summer Session via the Summer Session Website. Students are admitted as non-degree seeking students for the Summer Session only. Confirmation of admission is sent to the email provided on the application; students also receive registration and payment instructions.

Non-Credit Workshop: Enrollment is limited and forms are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Incomplete enrollment forms will not be considered. Students are notified via e-mail upon processing of the completed enrollment form. Workshop students are not subject to the off-site campus services mandatory fee and do not have access to online elements or University resources.

Calendar and Deadlines

Credit Courses: Summer Session calendars and deadlines govern all credit courses. Summer Session has two six-week sessions (Summer I and Summer II); each six-week session also has two three-week sessions. See Summer Session Calendars for session start and end dates and more. Information for specific processes is located at the following Website pages.

Non-Credit Workshops

  • Registration Deadlines
    • All Summer I: Last Day to Submit Workshop Enrollment Form, May 20.
    • All Summer II: Last Day to Submit Workshop Enrollment Form, July 1.
  • Cancellation Deadlines: There are no refunds after the dates below. Cancellation requests must be received in writing via e-mail to Please include your full name, university ID#, and statement of cancellation.
    • All Summer I: Last Day to Cancel Workshop with 100% refund, May 29. 
    • All Summer II: Last Day to Cancel Workshop with 100% refund, July 9.

Tuition & Fees

Application Fee: $75

Credit Course, Summer 2017. Tuition and fee rates are governed by approved UMD Summer Session rates. Below is a listing of all tuition and fee rates that apply. For an explanation of these charges, visit Summer Session Tuition & Fees.

  • MD In-state Resident, Undergraduate: $TBD per credit
  • Out-of-state Resident, Undergraduate: $TBD per credit
  • DC Consortium Student: Home Institution Rate
  • Student Services Fee: $92, flat rate

Non-credit Workshop, Summer 2017, Flat Rate.

  • Non-Phillips Members: $TBD
  • Phillips Members: $346

Please note: Notwithstanding any other provision of this or any other University publication, the University reserves the right to make changes in tuition, fees and other charges at any time such changes are deemed necessary by the University and the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. Although changes in tuition, fees, and charges ordinarily will be announced in advance, the University reserves the right to make such changes without prior announcement.

Payment Information

Credit Courses: The Summer Session Payment Policy does not follow the standard UMD fall/spring semester plan for students who register for credit courses. Students are not billed. Should successful payment not post, students may be canceled or withdrawn and lose their course seat if the course if full. The University will assess a 2.0% processing fee for all credit and debit card transactions for tuition and fee payments. See Summer Session Payment Information.

Non-Credit Workshops: Payment for non-credit workshops must accompany the form.

Academic Policies

Students who enroll in UMD credit courses and/or non-credit workshops are subject to the rules, policies and regulations found at Summer Session Academic Policies that include schedule adjustment, non-payment, cancellation, withdrawals, appeals, and more.
