UMD Services & Resources

Set-up Your UMD Accounts

To access UMD online resources, including registration, you must Activate Your Directory ID and Enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication. This is a 2-step process.

Step 1: Activate Your Directory ID

  • The Directory ID (and password) grants access to UMD resources.
  • If you did not used the SSN when applying, you’ll need your assigned Student Identification Number [SID] to login.  To obtain your SID, contact:
    • Undergraduate students: Email summer@umd.edu
    • Graduate students: See your Graduate School admission notification.

Step 2: Enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication

TERPmail & Email of Record

Email is UMD’s official means of communication. Faculty and staff use the email on the student record for all correspondence.  Students are responsible for checking their email, responding in a timely fashion, and maintain current contact information. UMD assumes no responsibility for the delivery of these electronic messages. Check your spam folder.

The email submitted on the application and posted on the student record is known as the Email of Record.  The student may change the email of record. Once you have activated the Directory ID and MFA, you can set-up a University email account—TERPmail.

University Identification number (UID)

This 9-digit number can be found by viewing your University Directory Entry.  Always include this number when communicating with faculty or staff.  This is the best and quickest way to find your record in any UMD system.

Access your University Directory Entry. If you did not used the SSN when applying, you’ll need your assigned Student Identification Number [SID] to login.  To obtain your SID, contact:

  • Undergraduate students: Email summer@umd.edu
  • Graduate students: See your Graduate School admission notification.

Student ID Card

The Student ID card is the physical ID for UMD students.  For Summer Session and Winter Session, the Student ID card is non-photo and only issued to visiting students who register for courses that meet at the College Park campus.  You’ll use it as a library card, shuttle bus pass, and Campus Recreation Center pass (Summer Session only).  Learn more

Visiting students taking a course at the College Park campus:
