Course Overview

General Description

Terp Scholars-Online is committed to providing rigorous and active virtual learning experiences. Students enroll in one three-credit course that is at the cutting-edge of theory, thought, and technology. Courses in Terp Scholars-Online are taught by world-class University of Maryland faculty and staff. Outside of class, students should expect to spend several hours a day on course-related assignments.  Both credit and grade earned post to the UMD transcript and become part of the student record. The course cannot be taken pass-fail or audit.

Courses are offered in a broad range of academic disciplines from UMD’s Colleges and Schools. Classes meet every day, Monday- Friday, with meeting times varying according to the specific course. On the Terp Scholars-Online application, students will be asked to select a first and second-choice course in the event the first selection has filled. Course selection is processed on a first-come, first-served basis when the complete application packet has been received.

Before selecting a course, view each course description, meeting times, and sample syllabus. The course description features a link to the sample syllabus that lists specific requirements. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to read the course syllabus in its entirety. Particular attention should be given to the material covered in the course and the times the course is offered. It is the student’s responsibility to review the course material and ensure they have the proper academic preparation to be successful in the course.

Online Course Instruction

Courses in the program use synchronous instruction which delivers the course in real-time. Students are expected to login to the course and engage in live course instruction at the specified time(s). Synchronous instruction provides the opportunity for students to interact with faculty and their peers. When selecting your course, check the specific course page to find the meeting time for synchronous instruction.

Many courses also use asynchronous instruction which provides students with course materials and other online content to complete on their own time.
