Prepare for college through rigorous academics, dynamic instruction, and virtual activities with the University of Maryland Terp Young Scholars—Online. Alongside other academically talented high school students, you’ll pursue an academic interest, engage with passionate faculty, and get a jump on college by earning three university credits.

Designed for high school students (rising grade 9 to graduating grade 12), Terp Scholars- Online delivers an academic experience that is at the forefront of theory, thought, and technology. You’ll choose one three-credit course, attend class, study, work on projects, prepare for exams, and interact with your peers in a virtual academic setting. Featuring rigorous online instruction, classes meet every day, Monday-Friday, with meeting times varying according to the specific course. Classes generally meet for three hours a day between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and may include an afternoon session.

Terp Scholars- Online is an academic program and acceptance is competitive and based upon academic performance. Terp Scholars are admitted as non-degree seeking students to the University of Maryland for the Summer Session. Students are registered for one three-credit university course for which a grade and credits will be earned. The course cannot be taken pass-fail or audit. The grade and credits earned post to the UMD transcript and are part of the student academic record.

In addition to the academic experience, Terp Scholars-Online features interactive virtual activities offered in the evenings that provide a glimpse of UMD’s rich student life.  Students are encouraged to attend and participate to the fullest. Upon completion of the program, students complete a survey. Over the years, these surveys demonstrate that those students who fully participated in the scheduled events were the ones with the highest satisfaction rating.

Before You Apply

  1. Select a Course.
  2. Review Grade and Credits Policy.
  3. Review Technical Requirements.

Important Considerations

  • Admission is competitive and contingent upon space availability. Early applicants are more likely to receive their first course selection and be guaranteed accommodations.
  • Participation in Terp Scholars does not guarantee admission into a degree-seeking program at UMD.
  • All students must demonstrate maturity, self-discipline, motivation, and a desire to succeed.

Attendance for the entire three-week program is mandatory.
