International Applicant Deadlines

Before submitting the application for Terp Scholars, applicants must read International Applicant Requirements, below. All application materials must be received by the posted deadline.

International Applicant Eligibility

  • International applicants must be at least 16 and no more than 19 years of age by July 1, 2024;
  • International applicants must be attending high school as a rising high school sophomore, junior, senior, or graduating senior; and
  • Applicants must have an unweighted academic average of 3.0 or better (on a U.S. scale).
    • If there are extenuating circumstances that have negatively impacted a student's GPA, the applicant can submit a GPA Exception Appeal prior to submitting the Terp Young Scholars application.
    • Submit Exception Appeal: Complete the GPA Exception Appeal form. The form requires an upload of your high school transcript, a letter of support from a high school teacher/administrator and a statement attesting to how you plan to succeed in the program.  

International Applicants Requiring an F-1 visa and I-20

  • International applicants requiring an F-1 visa and I-20 may only apply for the online option. The University does not issue the I-20 for 100% online programs. Applicants for the online option must complete Steps 1-4 by the posted deadline.
  • The commuter option is NOT open to students requiring an F-1 visa and I-20. The University will not issue the required documentation. There will be no refund of the non-refundable application fee. (Note: the program does not offer an option that provides campus housing).
  • B visas are not permitted. See U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs – Visitor Visa.

Permanent Residents

  • Applicants must complete Steps 1-4 by the posted deadline.

International Applicants Residing in the U.S. with a Visa Permitting Study

  • Applicants must complete Steps 1-4 by the posted deadline.

Select Commuter or Online Option

  • Applicants who select a course offered through in-person instruction must participate via the Commuter Option. The commuter option is NOT open to students requiring an F-1 visa and I-20. The University will not issue the required documentation. There will be no refund of the non-refundable application fee. (Note: the program does not offer an option that provides campus housing).
  • Applicants who select a course offered through 100% online instruction must participate via the Online Option

Instructions

  • Access Extended Studies Form Portal.
  • Select My Forms.
  • Select Start New Form.
  • Open Select Form Type: From the drop-down menu, select Terp Young Scholars Program Application.

Guidelines 

  • New Applicant: Must create an account.
  • Returning Student: Must reset your directory password and then log in with your UMD Directory ID. See UMD Password Management

Need Help?

  • Information is posted on the TerpEngage webpage.
  • An English language copy of transcript (report card) of applicant's secondary school academic record must include grades and cumulative GPA for all secondary schoolwork completed, including current coursework. An unofficial transcript is acceptable. Applicants can submit transcripts directly to the application system.
  • The secondary school may prefer to send the transcript directly. Provide them with a copy of the TYS Transcript Form. Submission directions are located on the form.

International Applicants Residing in the U.S. with a Visa Permitting Study

  • Submit a copy of the student’s passport (all pages), U.S. Visa, I-94 card, and I-20/DS-2019 (all pages).
  • Applicants with an I-20 from another sponsor/institution must provide a statement from the sponsor/institution granting permission to enroll in Terp Young Scholars.

Permanent Residents

  • Submit a copy of the student’s permanent residency card.

International applicants must provide evidence of English Proficiency by submitting TOEFL, IELTS or DET scores.

Notification

  • Applications are reviewed and admission offers made on a first-come, first-served basis. Reminder notices regarding missing items are sent to the email address provided on the application; check your spam folder. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all materials are sent and received by the posted deadlines.
  • To inquire about the status of the application, use the EXST contact form. Include full name, program name, and a complete statement regarding the requested action.

Confirmation of Admission

  • Following the offer of admission, parents/guardians and students must complete the Confirmation of Admission Process (opens March 1). This information is included in the offer of admission. 
  • Failure to complete this process by the posted deadlines will result in program cancellation and loss of course seat.
