Applying to Professional School

Advising

Dr. Joelle C. Presson, SIE Academic Director, offers planning advice for application to graduate or professional schools.

Reed-Yorke Health Professions Advising Office

The Reed-Yorke Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO) provides services to UMD students interested in health related professional schools. HPAO has a comprehensive process for preparing students for the application cycle. SIE students should make use of these services after they have a well-established academic record here at UMD, have met at least once with Dr. Presson, and are confident that they will follow through on their application process.

Listserv

  • The HPAO Listserv provides students with information relating to Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, and Allied Health careers as well as event announcements, internship and volunteer opportunities, healthcare news, and health school testing information.
  • To subscribe, see HPAO-Listserv.

Workshops

  • HPAO offers workshops to prepare for the application cycle as well as how to obtain letters of recommendations and writing a personal statement. Students planning to utilize the HPAO credentials and committee letter process MUST attend the following workshops: Am I Ready? And Navigating the Application Process.
  • For complete information, see HPAO-Workshops.

HPAO Credentials and Committee Letter Process

  • Contact HPAO no later than January of the year you will apply to medical or dental school to initiate the Committee Letter Process. You must have attended the workshops described above.
  • SIE students planning to utilize the HPAO credentials and committee letter process must have 24 science credits at UMD. In addition, a GPA of 3.0 or higher is strongly recommended.
