Newly Admitted Students
Newly admitted students must complete or understand the protocols listed below in order to access UMD accounts, resources, and systems.
Instructions
- Return to The Graduate School Application Portal.
- Graduate students must accept the offer of admission.
- Once accepted, the portal page will display an “Activation Code.”
- With this code, visit DIT-Identity Verification to activate the Directory ID and the UMD email account.

Email Overview
- Graduate students are automatically assigned two email accounts: UMD Gmail and TERPmail.
- UMD Gmail (@umd.edu) is the default for communication. Graduate students will be able to access their UMD Gmail account one year after graduation, after which the account will be disabled. For policies regarding the use of Gmail, see Standard Institutional Email.
- The TERPmail account is available for life. Students must activate their TERPmail account before graduation. See TERPmail Frequently Asked Questions.
Assistance
- It may take up two business days (Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm) for the Directory ID to become effective.
- Need help? Email gradschool@umd.edu or itsupport@umd.edu.
- In addition to the Directory ID and password, students use Multi-Factor Authentication to access UMD systems.

To access UMD’s wireless networks, students must first have the Directory ID.

- Eduroam is the preferred wireless network. For instructions, see Guide to Eduroam.
Students who did not submit official transcripts at the time of application receive provisional admission. Official transcripts must be submitted for full admission. Such notification is provided in the Graduate School's admission letter/email; no additional reminders are sent. Failure to submit official transcripts by the end of the first semester results in a registration block. The Graduate School removes the block when official transcripts have been received. In-Person and Blended Programs
- To obtain a photo Student ID card, visit Office of the Registrar, Customer Services, First Floor Mitchell Building, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Bring a government-issued photo id for identification purposes. Learn more.

Online and Offsite Programs
- Students in online programs are not issued a Student ID card as online resources are accessed through the Directory ID / Multi-Factor Authentication login protocols.
- Students in programs that do not meet at the UMD campus access online resources through the Directory ID / Multi-Factor Authentication login protocols. Students in offsite programs can also obtain a photo Student ID card but must come to campus. See instructions for In-Person and Blended Programs, above.
UMD issues a 9-digit number that is used to identify a student's academic and financial records.
- The UMD-UID can be found by viewing the student University Directory Entry.
- Always include this number when communicating with faculty or staff.
