Welcome to the University of Maryland's Office of Extended Studies

The Office of Extended Studies offers academic opportunities through Summer Term, Freshmen First, Young Scholars Program, Freshmen Connection Program, Winter Term, and Professional Programs.

Summer Term offers over 1,700 courses that are open to current Maryland students, visiting students from other universities and colleges, graduates, professionals, high school students, and more! Classes are offered morning, afternoon, evening, and online during 3-week or 6-week sessions. The Young Scholars Program enrolls academically talented high school students, who earn 3 college credits, pursue academic interests, discover career opportunities, and learn about university life. In Young Scholars Discovery, rising eighth and ninth graders explore bold ideas through diverse courses and seminars that encourage creative reasoning and problem solving. With Freshmen First, newly admitted Maryland freshmen ease into campus life and earn academic credit before the beginning of the fall semester.

Freshmen Connection is a fall semester extension program open to freshmen who accept spring admission to Maryland. Students enroll in this program to earn up to 17 credits toward their Maryland undergraduate degree and get on track to graduate in four years.

Winter Term, a three-week session in January, offers more than 300 courses that meet morning, afternoon, evening, and online. Current Maryland students, visiting students from other colleges, professionals, and more accelerate progress toward graduation, fulfill prerequisites, or meet a major requirement.

Professional Programs is the gateway to lifelong learning at the University of Maryland. Programs include professional master degrees and graduate certificates, post-baccalaureate opportunities, and customized programs that include seminars, work force training, or short courses crafted for industry application.
