Set-up UMD Accounts

To access UMD online resources, including registration, you must Activate Your Directory ID and Enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication. This is a 2-step process.

Step 1: Activate Your Directory ID

  • The Directory ID (and password) grants access to UMD resources.
  • If you did not used the SSN when applying, you’ll need your assigned Student Identification Number [SID] to login. To obtain your SID:
    • Undergraduate students: Email winter@umd.edu
    • Graduate students: See your Graduate School admission notification.

Step 2: Enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication

Set-up Email & Wireless Networks

Set-up TERPmail

TERPmail is UMD’s official means of communication.  When you applied, the email used on the application became the email of record.  However, most instructors require that students use TERPmail. In addition, to access UMD Wireless Networks, you must set-up TERPmail. Students are responsible for checking their TERPmail and responding in a timely fashion. Check your spam folder once you’ve set-up TERPmail as the email of record.

Change Your Email of Record

After activating TERPmail, you must change your email of record to the TERPmail account.

  • Visit Testudo (Change Address/Email)
  • Log-in with your Directory ID and password
  • Select “Edit”
  • Change posted email to your TERPmail account
  • Select “Update”

Access University Wireless Networks

To use UMD’s wireless networks, you must set-up TERPmail.

University Identification number (UID)

This 9-digit number can be found by viewing your University Directory Entry. Always include this number when communicating with faculty or staff.

If you did not used the SSN when applying, you’ll need your assigned Student Identification Number [SID] to login. To obtain your SID:

  • Undergraduate students: Email winter@umd.edu
  • Graduate students: See your Graduate School admission notification.

Student ID Card

The Student ID card is the physical ID for UMD students. For Winter Session, the Student ID card is non-photo and only issued to visiting students who register for courses that meet at the College Park campus. You’ll use it as a library card and shuttle bus pass. Learn more.

Visiting students taking a course at the College Park campus:

  • Obtain a non-photo Student ID card from Customer Services, First Floor Mitchell Building, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Bring a government-issued photo id for identification purposes.
  • For location assistance, see Campus Map.
  • Questions? Contact Customer Services at registrar-help@umd.edu.

Visiting students taking an online course:

  • Do not need a non-photo ID to access UMD online resources and services.
  • Upon admission, you receive an email with instructions to set-up login protocols that permits such access.
  • See UMD Online Resources for a list of online resources & services.

UMD Student Account Information

Review your UMD Student Account Information

  • Verify that your UMD student information, including Name, DOB, and student email are correct.
  • If there is an issue, email winter@umd.edu.

Granting Access to Student Academic or Financial Record

At UMD, the admitted student has the option of granting access to their academic or financial record.  Students are not required, by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), to grant this access.  For complete information, see Office of the Registrar—Student Privacy (FERPA Explained).

The process for granting access to either the academic or financial record is split.
